The studios in Māwhera Greymouth are fully operational now.
Above the Regent Theatre in town the textile collection is now hung up on rails in the storeroom and I have a friend sharing the space in the main room with me. Claire is a textile artist and dressmaker and I have offered some of the room so that we can share ideas. Welcome Claire!
I have the back of the studio, and the weaving loom, sewing machine and my desk are set-up and in use. It is good to be weaving again and I am enjoying learning how New Zealand wool differs to Shetland wool.
Across town and up the hill the art studio is also in use, now that it has been finished. It is peaceful and not over-looked by anyone so there is plenty of space and time to paint, write and sing. I have companions in friendly weka – two adults and a baby – and plenty of other birds and insects, including cicadas.
I have started to teach again, both singing and textiles, and this weekend ran a session on Design from Nature in the Left Bank Gallery. It feels great to be doing this once more.
The photos below are of the studio-on-the-hill. The next stage of this project is to get the garden in shape by removing the rest of the invasive plants and putting indigenous trees and shrubs in. With the climate on the Coast being so mild it won’t be long until the garden is looking like the rest of the forested hills around.
