Nearly 2000 years ago, the Italian city of Pompeii was obliterated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
The blast covered the settlement with ash and pumice that preserved, sometimes in remarkable detail, the details of everyday life in this Roman city. Over decades the site has been the focus of archaeology with astonishing finds showing us how the Ancient Romans lived.
A recent discovery in Pompeii has been of murals and a white mosaic floor in a newly-uncovered dining room. The murals, depictions from Greek mythology, were painted onto black walls, a striking contrast with the floor, and have been preserved almost intact. Their colours and condition indicate that they might have been amongst the last paintings to be made in the ill-fated city before its destruction.
