Since 1895 La Biennale di Venezia has been promoting art in its many forms. This year the theme, Stranieri ovunque/ Foreigners everywhere, has led to prestigious awards for Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia.
The Golden Lion for the Best Participant in the International Exhibition has been won by Mataaho Collective. This quartet of Māori wāhine make large installations, creating as a single author. Their work is “Takapau”, (above) a woven artwork using reflective truck strapping that fills the space by drawing on traditional practice and heritage of woven ceremonial mats.
Archie Moore from Australia wins a Golden Lion for Best National Participation for his work “kith and kin“, a genealogical exploration of more than 24,000 generations spanning 65,000 years, curated by Ellie Buttrose.
