Can indigenous knowledge help mathematics?

A university in Australia, the Australian National University, has developed a course in mathematics that includes teaching about Indigenous Knowledge.

For anyone interested in mathematics, particularly where the arts are concerned – see the read more section below – a course that includes this kind of knowledge is invaluable. There are many ways of explaining the world and this course includes some of the fascinating ways in which people have developed an understanding of mathematical principles.

An article from the British Times Higher Education explains the arguments for and against the inclusion of such knowledge in Higher Education courses. According to Professor Rowena Ball, the co-creator of the course,

“traditions of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders deserve recognition as exercises in recognised mathematical fields – including computation, geometry, vectors and group theory – with applications in areas such as meteorology, navigation and astronomy.” The use of indigenous mathematics could also encourage more students to take up the study of the subject.
