Hélène Kuhn Ferruzzi

Venice has long been known for its music, art and artists.

In the narrow route along a canal that leads past Peggy Guggenheim’s gallery of European and American art is a small shop with windows that tell of the artistic eye of Hélène Kuhn Ferruzzi. Enchanting and wondrous, this shop is a destination for the cognoscenti who desire something unique to wear.

Hélène Kuhn Ferruzzi was born in France into a family of musicians so it is no surprise that, upon moving to Venice as model for Bobo Feruzzi, a Venetian painter, she took up singing. When her vocal health was compromised she began to look at printing on textiles, another Venetian speciality, and so began a new career.

As we passed the windows of her shop, on our way to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, a dress on display made us stop and then go in. And what an excellent surprise that was! We had a long conversation with the artist who was sitting at her desk, and learned all about her passion for music and textiles, and how her work came to be recognised as one of the highlights of the city. Of course, we could not leave without a book – Nel Ritmo Del Colore (In the rhythm of colour) – and eventually a beautiful dress for the collection.

This dress is hand-tailored from the artist’s cloth. With its cloth-covered buttons, painstaking pleating and expertly cut-and-assembled fabric it is a work of art in itself and one that we are very proud to have in the textile collection.

Love the colours the artist has used in her creation. They are colours I love to use in my quilting projects. Hope you had a great trip and saw lots of interesting things to tell us about.

We sure did, Susanne. There is plenty more to tell on the blog. Aren’t those colours amazing. Even better in real life.

It has fitted everyone who has tried it on so far, no matter their age or shape. A very lovely thing to have in the collection.
