The textile hub in Greymouth Māwhera is taking shape…
After a few weeks the studio is now looking more like a working space. There is a large tables, standing height, to use for printing and art, a worktable and a meeting space. Shortly there will be sewing machines and, by the end of the year, looms and weaving equipment. There is now art on the walls, and textile pieces, and two display cases with objects, poetry and books. It is all adding-up to A Creative Space and we are on track to open up to the public over summer.
The photograph below is of the back of the studio space and is of the workshop area. To the left of the bookcase is the front area with its huge shop windows facing onto the street. The windows let in dazzling light and passersby can stop to see what is going on.
The artworks have been chosen from the collection. Most of them have a textile or location relevance; there is a wall of marine pieces, a wall of costume and geometric pieces, and a wall of landscapes. They add to the atmosphere and are helping to make this feel like a studio with a purpose.
