The natural world is almost impossible to imagine in its complexity and intertwined relationships and yet much of that world is under threat.
Using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) Kate Beck trains these AI machines to understand how insects, plants and their pollinators support each other, and allow us to think about what might happen in the future if these relationships break down.
The result is a series of tapestries, Impossible Evolutions, that show insects, those creatures most at risk of extinction, imagined amongst the landscapes in which they live. By making these relationships larger than life, and by using tapestry, the work enables us to think differently about the things that we too often take for granted, and help us to imagine what might happen in the future.
