Iconic Australian design

In the 1980s and ’90s, jumpers in Australia became startling.

Beginning with Coogi, a fashion label first established in Melbourne under the name Cuggi, the bright colours and bold patterning of these sweaters took the entertainment world by storm with The Notorious B.I.G. (Biggie Smalls) name-checking them in his lyrics and sporting the look.

An Emaroo sweater with its bright colours and vibrant style.

Coogi style – the name was changed to be “more Australian” – was copied by others, maybe including Emaroo, or was this label an off-shoot of Coogi? A new jumper has been added to the collection from Emaroo and we would like to know more. The images on this page are of the colours in the piece and its label.

There is very little information about Emaroo available; a few items on the internet for sale, and that is about all. If there are any readers out there in blogland who know anything or can point us in the right direction for finding out about this sweater, and the history of the label, I would be very grateful for the heads-up.
