Over the Christmas period we took a tour of the South of the Te Waipounamu/ the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The trip took in the West Coast route to Haast with an overnight stop in Ōkārito, another in Haast (specifically to have a fish lunch at Jackson Bay at the end of the road), and one more in Wānaka before heading down to Curio Bay in The Catlins. From there we explored the South with its waterfalls, forests, open farmland, ocean view, all underlain by a rich history of settlement. For five days we travelled, taking in the furthest South it is possible to go by road on the mainland, and the small villages and towns that exist in that part of the country.
Two more nights on a friends’ farm in Oamaru followed by one in Ōtautahi Christchurch before heading back for New Year celebrations at home in Greymouth rounded off our trip. It was a trip of more than 2,000 kms (1,240 miles) if all the day trips are added, and well worth it.
The blog this week is about some of the things we have seen and experienced on the tour.
