Natural colours

To the first-time visitor New Zealand Aotearoa seems to offer little in the way of natural colour, especially in the heavily wooded South of Te Waipounamu/ The South Island.

Green is the predominant hue. Many different shades and tones of green, but green nevertheless. However, there is plenty of colour around, and possibly none more startling than in Cathedral Caves. These are two entrances from the sea that has carved its way into the cliff face, joining together to make a 200 metre long, 30 metre high passageway. It is hugely impressive and is a popular tourist attraction.

Who is charging to see the Catherdrial Caves? This was free like the Abel Tasman, some years back. I didn’t think any New Zealand Icons were charging to be seen. News to me

Hi Christine. The charge is to cover the cost of the boardwalk, car park and track, all of which are privately owned. It is great walk down and there are ablution blocks at the car park plus staff to help and keep visitors safe. Well worth a trip!
