The Art of Knitting – a book

“The Art of Knitting”, published in 1977 in the UK, has just been added to the studio library.

This book is filled with examples of antique knitting, mainly from Europe but also from Asia and Middle East. The third section – The patterns – is a veritable feast of contemporary-for-then versions of knitted garments inspired by the fabrics and items of the past, such as a 17th Century Venetian cape, based on a similar garment to this and an 18th Century German knitted carpet (the fabulous man’s jumper below).

The designer of the modern pieces in this rather wonderful book was Anne Gordon, a designer in the UK, and the book was published by Book Club Associates in London. The history in the book was researched and written up by Jane Rapley, a lecturer and merchandising manager of a British knitwear company at the time.

The studio library is open for browsing by appointment at the moment. Please email to arrange a time to come in to see the collection.
