This weekend it has been the first Open Studios in Māwhera/ Greymouth.
Organised by the Left Bank Art Gallery, the Open Studios has seen visitors travelling around the district to visit artists and craftspeople in their workplaces. Yesterday, Saturday, the textile studio saw forty people through the doors. Many were local but a few were on holiday from Australia, Ireland, the United States and Colombia.
As always, meeting people is a wonderful way to find out new things. As an example, one of the visitors has mentioned the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite in the US, with its Art Deco murals, textiles and decoration. It will be the subject of another post later on.
Opening up the studios has allowed people to see how artists work and what we produce. Although the textile studio is not filled yet with looms – they arrive on Tuesday this coming week – the space is looking good with paintings and pictures, and lots of textile works on the walls. People seem to be very interested in what we are doing in the studio and, fingers crossed, that bodes well for the future. The studio will open in the first few days of winter for workshops.
Many thanks for organising this event, Left Bank!
