Mitsuko Asakura

Mitsuko Asakura is a Japanese artist from Kyoto.

Kyoto is home to the famous Gion Festival with its elaborate floats of textiles and sculpture, bearing witness to the city’s rich textile history. Asakura became interested in dyeing – her father was a skilled dyer – and weaving at an early age and her work has been recognised in Japan, Europe and the United States for its skilful use of hand-dyed colour and texture. The artist describes her work as being like pointillism because the colours do not mix, retaining their hues under light, but each adding to the overall effect. Her “Oritatamu” series features tapestries that fold and undulate, combining contemporary and traditional in beautiful sculptural artworks.
