Zeitz MoCAA is carved out of old grain silos on the quayside of Cape Town’s docks and features the contemporary art of Africa.
One Must Be Seated is a multi-disciplinary show by Ghanaian-American artist Rita Mawuena Benissan of her Ghanaian culture. Reimagining the royal umbrella and stool that represent Akan chieftaincy through tapestry, video, photography and textiles, the artist presents the act of “enstooling”, the installation of a new chief who takes a seat on the stool that has been chosen for them. Vietnamese American artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen explores the complexities of colonisation and war that have enmeshed Vietnam, Sengal and Morocco identity. Through video and objects the artist tells the stories of those who do not have voices, presenting a challenge to perceptions of Africa. In a moving video piece and two embroideries the story of the Moroccans who defected from the French Army to fight in the First Indochina War is told.
