A recent addition to the studio collection are two packs of vintage Compuknit from 1974.

Compuknit was a system for knitting garments. These two packs were published, under licence from Wolmark, South Africa, in Salisbury, now Harare, in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. The packs contain pairs of discs that each have a moveable rotating back. In the front disc are two “T”-shaped slots and by rotating the back disc to show numbers in the top part of the “T”, one for bust size and another for yarn weight, a set of numbers appear in the body of the slot. These numbers are the instructions for knitting collars, sleeves, backs and fronts of jumpers, cardigans and pullovers! Ingenious and wonderfully nostalgic, these packs are a reminder of a time when home-knitting was in almost every household. What fun!
