The small settlement of Barrytown is just up the Coast Road from Greymouth, on the way to Punakaiki and it has a rather wonderful hall.

The Barrytown Hall is famous. Many gigs, concerts and events have been held there over the years – the hall was built in 1929 and has been hosting music since 1972 – with the support of a committee made up of local residents. It is small in size but enormous in terms of its reach and reputation, a real West Coast institution.

The High Summer Ball is a fancy dress occasion, and features Salad Boys, a band from Christchurch Ōtautahi , and Lyttelton’s MEDal group. They are supported by a local group ReXx BoUrKe & the Aways. Head to Barrytown for a night of dancing and escapism on the 7th March. Doors open at 8pm.

Great community hub. Was part of the community for over 20 years only moving when my husband died. Glad it survived the battle to try and close it a few years ago due to apparent but not totally real noise issues. Think the sea was actually noisier than some of the activities inside.

We love going to Barrytown, Christine. The Hall is a real treasure and the scenery along the Coast Road. Well, there is reason why it is one of the top scenic drives in the world!
