A new window display for autumn features a printed hanging by the French artist, Jean-Claude Bissery.
Known for his use of vibrant colour and design, the piece hanging in the studio is entitled “Boucheron”, which translates as “woodcutter”. In the image a man strides through a forest filled with autumnal leaves, carrying a cut tree branch. With its use of red, orange, green and yellow, it is perfect for the season.
Bissery was born in 1930 and worked as an artist, mainly in tapestry. The “Woodcutter” is number 39 of this limited edition of 100, and, being printed to imitate woven tapestry, would have been cheaper to buy than a true tapestry when it was made. France in the middle of the last century was producing beautiful works of art on textiles, and this artwork was produced by Robert Four, an atelier that continues the Aubusson art of tapestry.
This is one of the pieces in the textile collection from the French industry of tapestry, woolwork and print.
