The current exhibition at the Left Bank Art Gallery in Māwhera Greymouth has an interesting premise behind it: the connections between collectors and artists.
In this show Friends of the Gallery were asked to choose a piece from their collection to share with someone else, who would respond to it with a piece of their own. The result? An eclectic and surprising juxtaposition of works, some international and some from Aotearoa New Zealand, in a variety of mediums and techniques.
The show includes paintings, etching, drawings, ceramics, textile works and taonga puoro. Some of the pieces shown are a tapestry by Marilyn Rea-Menzies of Musicians in the Square alongside a Norwegian oil painting by Finn Faaborg of a trio of Musicians, Andrea Du Chatenier has supplied a tufted rug floor sculpture, Whakaari White Island (with planned spa and resort), that is presented beside Ian Miller’s oil pastel Man and Dog in Red Forest, and there are two textile pieces by Audrey Labelle, one in a private collection and the other in the artist’s own collection. There is also a small collection of Māori nose flutes.

The show runs until 23rd March. The Left Bank Art Gallery is at 1 Tainui Street, Māwhera Greymouth and is open Tuesday – Friday 10am to 4pm, and Saturday from 10:30am until 2pm.
