Over the past few months the choir at the Left Bank Gallery has been working on pieces to perform. Amongst them has been Puhihuia – an article about this piece appeared on the blog in March – and the South African piece, Dingaka Lullaby (Onika’s Song).
Dingaka Lullaby was created for a film called Dingaka in the early 1960s by a Jewish woman, Bertha Egnos, who also co-created the smash (and controversial) hit, Ipi Tombi. However, there is controversy over this song and next week’s blog entry will fill in the details about the appropriation of a tune.
In the meantime, have a listen to the electronic version that the choir is learning (below) and to this version on YouTube.
