Australian Aboriginal Music by Didgeridoo Aboriginal Dreamtime.

The didgeridoo (officially spelt as “Didjeridu”) of Australia is ancient, at least 1500 years old, and its low droning sound and percussive rhythms are instantly recognisable. It is a complex instrument to master but has spread across the globe to become an iconic sound.

Sheep Shearing Song by Calum Kennedy

The Scottish singer, Malcolm Martin Kennedy, was known for his Gaelic singing and was renowned as “the golden voice of the Highlands”. This song was his own original composition.

Landscape by Alessandro Alessandroni

The Italian composer and musician, Alessandro Alessandroni, was a multi-instrumentalist, film score composer and an accomplished whistler.

Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest

This song was written by  Sherman Kelly while recovering from a vicious gang attack in St Croix. It became famous in this version by King Harvest in 1973.

Doddies Dream by Blazing’ Fiddles

Hailing from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Blazin’ Fiddles has won the world of folk music over with their infectious performances and nuanced interpretations of traditional and contemporary tunes.

Songlines are a way for Aboriginal people to navigate the land. By memorising songs that tell of landmarks and identifying features along a route it is possible to walk across the vast landscapes of Australia without getting lost.

Rare, from the album of the same name that was released in 2020, was first revealed on an Instagram Live stream on August 15th 2018. Selena Gomez is an American singer, actress, philanthropist and businesswoman, and has an impressive array of credentials and activism to her name.

Shearing the Sheep (and The Musical Priest) by Joe Derrane

Irish American accordion player, Joe Derrane, has been credited with re-popularising a type of accordion that is now familiar to most people who enjoy music. The diatonic button accordion or melodeon is capable of playing complex harmony on its multiple sets of buttons.

Enderby Island Rabbit by Lullaby for Peaceful Sleep

Enderby Island Rabbits are a rare breed from this sub-Antarctic Island. The island is now free of rabbits but before they were eliminated a group was rescued to preserve the genes. Introduced by the Australian Acclimatisation Society to the island to provide food for sailors, the bunnies lived feral for more than a century and overran the land. They quickly ate all the available food and turned to seaweed for nourishment. Now they need the algae to survive.

The Lonely Goatherd – Rogers and Hammerstein

Julie Andrews provides the instantly recognisable vocals to this song from the musical “The Sound of Music”. This version is from the 1965 film. Who can forget the swooping opening scene of Maria von Trapp atop the mountains, singing “The Hills are Alive”? Here is how it was filmed.

Tapestry by Parry Music

Parry Music was a company that was formed in 1974 in Canada to produce music recordings. The company has closed down but its back catalogue is now owned by another organisation and the recordings have been made available on Spotify.

This Sky by The Derek Trucks Band.

Ending the playlist this week is a track by a band named after its founder. Derek Trucks has been nominated twice to Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
