Knitting in Antarctica

28 hat patterns from the land of snow and ice.

The poles are places of extraordinary beauty, and apparently that lends itself to knitwear!

In a new-to-the-library book called “Knitting in Antarctica”, authors Lynn A Hamann  and Christine M Powell  explore what it means to knit in this wild place through stories and patterns for 28 hats. The book is filled with photographs by Anthony Powell, photographer and filmmaker who, along with the authors, has spent considerable lengths of time at McMurdo Station at the pole.

Knitting is one of the hobbies people take up while in Antarctica. Old knitwear is repurposed or remade into new garments and colour is a Big Thing in this land of ice and snow. There are even knitting cruises (check out this link for some of those.)

The studio library in Greymouth will be open for public browsing and use once the equipment is all installed. The books are not loaned out but visitors are free to use them in the studio for research, inspiration and relaxation. To do so, please send an email to request a time to come along.
