I am looking at the possibility of running small-group tours in Te Waipounamu/ The South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.
While in Shetland I created textile tours during which I took people around the islands to places of historical and textile interest. Along the way we explored scenery and the amazing places of the archipelago. Now I am exploring if such a thing could be viable in New Zealand.
I am interested in your views. Would you be keen to take a tour based on textiles that would possibly take in a high country station (a farm in the higher altitudes of the South Island), historical sites as well as the different textile traditions in the country? Would you be interested in combining such a tour with food and New Zealand wine, and add a day or two of workshops to capture the adventure? The pictures below show the way I make my designs. Would you be interested in doing something along these lines?
Any views would be greatly appreciated. You can email me at andy@globalyell.org or leave comments below this article.

Yes, I would be interested in such a tour. I enjoyed doing one with you in Shetland.
Fabulous, Kerry. I look forward to sharing the progress as I get onto it.
Could be interested. At 81 not too fit for standing too long but can still walk reasonably well so would need more details about any proposed tour before committing. Would prefer to go with a more mature group of people and a mix of singles and not all couples.
That sounds like a really good idea, Christine. Thank you for the feedback.
I would definitely be interested in a tour! Hope you get a positive response.
Hi Frieda. Excellent! The replies have all been very positive!
What a great idea. I have just left NZ to go back to work in Aus so wouldn’t go on a tour in the near future, but hopefully others would attend.
Maybe include some harakeke/flax textile creators.
A visit to a merino-focused station would be good. Maybe tap into soft wool/fibre producers – gotlands and alpacas. Sorry I don’t know any but a craft co-op in Geraldine might know of producers.
Your design process looks fascinating. Definitely cover that in your tour!
Cheers
Fantastic feedback, Jenny. Thank you.
Sounds fab, I would be interested!
And you would be very welcome, Deborah. I’ve been following what you’ve been up to with great interest, on Facebook.
My sister Julie and I took one of your Shetland tours and loved it! We are in the states so it would be a long trip but we would try to join you if you start tours there!
Fabulous Katie! That would be fun. Touring on the other side of the world!
Great idea Andy!!! I did one of your Shetland tours and loved it, so would certainly be interested in touring with you in the South Island in the future. Hope you get lots of interest and can organise tours soon!
Cheers from Sue O’Dwyer.
Thanks Susanne. I will start looking at this towards the end of the year and let you all know how things progress. There is lots of interest, it seems!
