The town of Lucca in Italy is home to a unique art biennale that focuses on paper.
In the 14th Century Lucca started to produce parchment paper and in the 16th Century the first mill was founded there to produce paper at scale. After the Second World War the town prospered and it is still the largest producer of paper in Europe. The history of paper-making in Lucca is long and in 2004 LUBICA was launched to celebrate that identity.
The use of paper in art, fashion and architecture has been the main focus of this show where culture, textile art, recycling, social conscience and environmental sustainability are all in the mix. You can see some of the pieces that have been exhibited previously on Facebook here, and you can read about calls for artists to join in here.
Brandi Cole is one of the artists who has shown at the Biennale. Using recycled materials, and textile techniques as well as art practices, the artist creates portraits and wearable art that evokes and stimulates.
