Spring in the Cape of South Africa can be a riot of colour.

The native flora of the Cape is 69% endemic, meaning that it grows nowhere else in the world naturally. That makes it an important hotspot for biodiversity.

Every Spring the bulbs flower in what looks like unpromising areas, transforming the landscape with intense colour and surprising hues. One of the areas that is a must-see is the little township of Darling where there are two protected areas where these bulbs and other flowering natives can be seen. Another is the Cedarberg region where different flowers can be seen, and yet another is the area around Cape Town where proteas and aloes of various types produce their blooms. Spectacular!
