Cary Wolinksy was a photographer, well-known for his images that featured in publications like National Geographic and Smithsonian.

In 1972 while in India on assignment, Wolinksy met a man in a hotel bar who persuaded the photographer to accompany him to his town, Bhadohi, where carpets are woven. This fortuitous encounter started him on a love affair with textiles and cloth, travelling around the world to capture Threads in 24 countries over more than forty years.

In one of the iconic images produced for the series, the photographer travelled to New Zealand to photograph a half-shorn sheep in order to explain a year’s worth of wool growth. The resulting image was not easy to get…
