Vivienne Mountford, in 1993, created a wonderfully witty and deceptively powerful artwork to celebrate women.
Edmond’s Cook Book is a New Zealand institution. For more than 100 years the company has made baking supplies and sold cookbooks. Everybody in Aotearoa knows Edmonds!
The old factory building in Otautahi Christchurch became iconic, its facade gracing the cover of cookbooks for decades. Sadly, the building was demolished but in 1991 the gardens were acquired by the City Council and saved for the public to visit and use.
Vivienne Mountford created a felted artwork to celebrate the achievements of women in Canterbury since suffrage. The 2 metre square art piece is of the facade of the Edmond’s factory with photographs of notable women in the windows of the building. The piece is now on show at the Kate Sheppard House Te Whare Waiutuutu, courtesy of the University of Canterbury who own it.
The photographs at the end of the article show each of the sets of windows while the image below tells who the image portrays and what they are known for: art, music, embroidery, law, business and much more besides.
