A new book on how opera became African has recently been published and it promises to be a fascinating read.
Opera was introduced to Cape Town in South Africa in the 19th Century and was originally the preserve of the privileged few. When democracy came to the country in 1994, people thought that opera would die but the opposite has happened. New black African singers began to appear and the artform took on a uniquely African look and feel.
In this book, Wayne Muller explores these changes through the eyes of critics of the time after apartheid and traces the path that opera has taken to becoming African.
