Piupiu are woven Māori garments that are worn either around the waist or over the shoulder.
The Biennale of Sydney, an event that gathers together artists from across the world, commissioned the art piece from kairaranga (weavers) Hone Bailey, Paehoro Konui, Merānia Heke-Chase and Manu Fox who created it over three months, working on it for up to 12 hours a day. The piupiu is thought to be the largest ever made, measuring 4 square metres. It will be shown at the Biennale from March 9th to June 10th 2024.
