Mayfair, in London, the capital of the United Kingdom, is an expensive and desirable place to live. And work.

Today Mayfair is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the country, (although this wasn’t always the case), and it boasts luxury hotels and shops as well as being commemorated on the London Monopoly Board as the most expensive square to purchase!

In post-Second-World-War Britain, the fashion market was reviving after the austerity of conflict. The lifting of rationing in 1949 meant that British consumers were finally able to buy fashions that had been available since 1947 in Europe, Christian Dior’s New Look among them.

A light and frothy film (a sort-of musical) that captures the atmosphere of the era is available on YouTube. Maytime in Mayfair is a light-hearted film about the trials and tribulations of love, set in the fashion houses of London. One particularly memorable scene is of models stepping out of the pages of Vogue Magazine, dressed in the finest of designer clothes by such as Hardy Amies, Worth of London and others. Spectacular fashion as had not been seen in London before must have been an eye-opener for audiences of the day and, despite dismissive reviews, the film was a success.
