A saree (sari) that has an illustrious history has been added to the collection of the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian.
The saree was worn by in 2013 when the Indian space orbiter mission to Mars, Mangalyaan, successfully reached Mars, the first Asian country to do so and the fourth in the world. The images that circled the globe after the achievement included women from the Indian Space Research Organisation who were wearing bright, colourful cloths. Nandini Harinath, project manager, mission designer, and deputy operations director, donated the outfit she was wearing at the time to the Smithsonian in 2021, saying that “The saree is symbolic of the modern Indian woman and this one [is] dedicated to all those who worked on the Mangalyaan mission.”
